How to Make Meatballs
Meatballs are delicious and can be used alone, with spaghetti or put inside sub sandwiches!
Meatballs can be flavoured in a range of ways, with a variety of ingredients depending on your preference, which means you can create your own tasty homemade meatball recipe that will be sure to stay in the family.
Meatballs are relatively easy to make, but there are a few vital steps to ensure your meatballs stay together and taste great. We’re here to give you our top tips on how to make the perfect meatballs.
Which Meat Is Best to Use for Meatballs?
Meatballs can be created with any type of meat, including beef, pork, lamb and poultry. The most popular meatballs are made with minced beef or pork.
The meat you decide to use should be easily ground and chopped up extremely finely so that it can be combined with other ingredients and formed into a ball shape.
Meatballs are traditionally the size of a golf ball but can be created to whichever size you prefer; whether this is small or large.
Make sure that whatever size you make your meatballs there is enough room for them while cooking.
How Do You Make Meatballs from Scratch?
The first step to making the perfect meatballs is by grinding your meat (skip this step if you have bought meat that has already been ground).
Once your meat has been ground, you will want to season it with salt and pepper along with any other herbs you like. This seasoned meat mixture can also be combined with other ingredients, such as vegetables.
Onions, garlic, red pepper flakes and grated parmesan cheese are very popular ingredients for meatballs. There are a number of recipes you can find online that use a variety of ingredients depending on how you want your meatballs to taste.
The final step to preparing your meatballs is to add eggs and breadcrumbs which will bind the mixture together and stop the balls from falling apart while they are being cooked. Form balls with the mixture in your hands and place aside.
There are two popular ways to cook your homemade meatballs. You can either shallow fry them or cook them in the oven.
To shallow fry, you will need a non-stick pan with enough sunflower or vegetable oil to cover half of the meatball.
Fry the meatballs on medium heat for around 10 to 15 minutes; you will know when they are ready as they will no longer be pink inside. It is important to regularly turn your meatballs while frying them so that they are cooked evenly.
The breadcrumbs used on your meatballs trap the escaping fat and juice while frying, which means that your meatballs will be tasty and flavoursome.
To oven cook, bake your meatballs for 25 minutes at a temperature of 200C or 180C fan. Meatballs can dry out in the oven if not prepared properly, it is recommended that you only oven bake your meatballs if they have ingredients such as onions and other vegetables inside to keep their moisture.
Your meatballs will have clear juices and be evenly browned when ready to serve.
Do You Need Egg to Make the Meatballs?
It is vital that you use eggs when making your meatballs, otherwise, the mixture will fall apart when being fried or baked.
If you do not have any eggs then you can also use milk to bind your mixture together with breadcrumbs. You should use around 1 to 2 eggs per pound of meat; you want the eggs to simply act as the ingredient that keeps the balls together rather than making a difference to their flavour.
Eggs and breadcrumbs are the most important ingredients for meatballs to keep in their flavour and stop them from coming apart.
What is the Secret to Good Meatballs?
The secret to good meatballs is the seasoning and ingredients you use within your mixture. Italian meatballs commonly have basil and parmesan cheese in their mixture, which taste great paired with spaghetti or any other pasta.
Another secret is to not overcrowd your meatballs in the frying pan or oven tray. Make sure your meatballs are evenly spaced apart to give them room to cook; if you do not have enough room then cook your meatballs in batches to ensure they are all made to perfection.
Meatballs are surprisingly easy to make, but if you do not have too much time on your hands then you can also make meatballs from sausages.
Simply squeeze out the sausage meat and form balls to create simple and quick pork meatballs.
